Brian grew up in Walsham Road, Feltham, and returned to the town last month to unveil a memorial to friend and bandmate Freddie Mercury, who also hailed from the area.

Now politicians want to recognise Brian himself by bestowing on him the highest honour the borough can give and raised the suggestion at a council meeting last week.

The award has traditionally been reserved for former politicians and community figures, but Feltham Councillor Peter Hills, who got plans in motion for the Freddie Mercury memorial, wants members of the public to be able to nominate three people a year to widen the scope of those recognised. He has proposed Brian May as the first candidate.

He said: "He's a Feltham boy and would be a great role model for the young people of Hounslow. He's done a lot of campaigning for good causes and has a clean-cut lifestyle for a rock star.

"When he came to the memorial unveiling, he spent a lot of time talking to people and signing autographs and so many people said what an approachable guy he was."

Feltham and Heston MP Alan Keen also backed the campaign, saying: "I believe that he will be a real inspiration to young people in the area."

Brian lived in Walsham Road for more than 10 years and when he visited Feltham last month, he recounted how much of his early time with Freddie Mercury was spent in the town.

The modest guitarist was honoured when the Chronicle contacted him this week to tell him of the campaign.

As ever, he was not keen to grab the limelight, saying only: "It's a nice thought."
